Important information
Hay is a super important part of the menu for your rodents, rabbits and horses. They should always be able to eat hay.
Why is hay so important?
Chewing hay keeps their teeth short. Otherwise they can grow too long and cause dental problems.
Guinea pigs and rabbits are completely adapted to eating all day long. Their digestive tract should never be empty, otherwise they could have problems with their digestion.
If guinea pigs and rabbits eat a lot of hay, they do not become overweight as easily. They then eat less food that makes them fat.
It takes quite some time to chew hay properly. This way, your animals will be less likely to get bored when they eat a lot of hay. If your rabbit experiences stress, it can also be helpful chewing the hay.
Horses and hay. Horse teeth grow approximately until the sixth year of life. After that, the teeth wear out almost as much as they grow. It is worn away by grinding chewing movements. The horse chews roughage more and this promotes good and even wearing of the molars. But concentrates hardly need to be chewed. In addition; Fibers allow a horse to chew and thus ensure good digestion. This is because a horse’s entire digestive system is naturally designed to digest small amounts of coarse fibers such as roughage and hay during the day.
